Electrolysis is a permanent alternative to manscaping. It removes body hair for good in any zone that men typically groom.
If the constant cycle of trimming, irritation, ingrown hairs, coarse regrowth, and the emotional toll of unwanted hair has worn you down, there is a permanent way out.
Manscaping Grows Back in a Few Days
The frustration with manscaping is not the first trim. It is the hundredth. Most hair removal methods men rely on require upkeep every one to three days, and regrowth brings stubble, razor burn, and ingrown hairs. Among adults who groom body hair, roughly one in four report grooming-related injuries including cuts, burns, and rashes.
Each body zone has its own challenges. Chest hair grows back as coarse stubble within days. The groin area is prone to irritation and ingrown hairs from shaving. The back and shoulders are nearly impossible to reach alone, leaving most men dependent on someone else or simply avoiding the area entirely.
Many men avoid taking their shirt off at the pool or beach because of unwanted body hair. That self-consciousness adds up over years of maintenance that never actually solves the problem.
What we see in the clinic: Men often come in after years of dealing with the maintenance cycle. One client, a red-headed man with an extremely dense, coarse beard, could not shave at all and could only trim. After two clearings, about half the hair was gone and what remained grew back finer. He finally had a normal beard he could shave.
Is Permanent Body Hair Removal Possible?
Electrolysis is the only hair removal method recognized as permanent. As a form of permanent hair removal, it creates a barrier between the blood supply and the hair seed. Once a follicle is properly treated, it stops producing hair for good.
A common misconception is that electrolysis cannot handle large areas. Any area of the body can be treated. Larger zones like the back or chest simply mean longer sessions, not a longer treatment plan.
Electrolysis works on all skin tones and all hair colours, including grey, white, red, and blonde hair. Laser hair removal requires pigment contrast between skin and hair and is cleared only for permanent hair reduction, not removal. This permanence is what sets electrolysis and laser hair removal apart.
Where Men Get Electrolysis for Manscaping
For men hair removal, the most common electrolysis treatment areas include beard shaping, groin clearing, full back treatment, and eyebrow grooming.
Beard shaping (cheeks and neck) is the most common request. Most men want shaping rather than full beard removal, cleaning up the cheek line and neckline so daily shaving covers less ground.
Groin area is the second most popular. Permanent removal eliminates the irritation and ingrown hairs that come with shaving this sensitive zone.
Full back including shoulders is another area men commonly treat. Reaching your own back is only part of the problem. Irritation, ingrown hairs, the coarse feel of regrowth, and the self-consciousness of visible back hair all add up. Permanent removal addresses all of it.
Eyebrows are a high-precision area, typically handled by an experienced Electrologist. Treatments focus on thinning and shaping for a clean look without ongoing maintenance. Once the hair is gone, there is no way to bring it back, so precision matters.
Most clinics limit sessions up to one hour. Jade Clinics offers multi-hour sessions, even a full day when needed, to maximize the efficiency of the treatment plan. For larger areas like the back, two Electrologists can treat two zones simultaneously, cutting the overall time commitment.
Jennifer’s insight: A lot of other clinics do not treat private areas. We consider them just another area that needs to be treated. We maintain a non-judgemental environment, and men feel comfortable coming to us and getting rid of unwanted hair permanently.
Can You Get Electrolysis Over a Tattoo?
Electrolysis can safely treat hair over tattoos, while laser hair removal cannot. The laser targets pigment and can damage tattoo ink, so tattooed skin is off limits for that method. Electrolysis treats the follicle directly without affecting the surrounding skin or ink.
Most Electrologists will not treat over a tattoo. Jade Clinics does, given the tattoo is fully healed and the work is done by one of our senior Electrologists who understands the anatomy of tattooed skin.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
A full manscaping-oriented treatment plan of electrolysis for men typically takes 12 to 18 months of regular sessions. The electrolysis approach does not differ by body area (except the face, which requires specialized technique). The only difference is time on the table: a small zone like the eyebrows may take as little as 15 minutes, while a full back session with two Electrologists can run several hours. The total treatment plan duration can be the same across areas, as long as the entire zone is cleared during each session.
Pain is typically less than men expect. Most describe the sensation as a brief pinch or mild heat on each follicle when topical numbing cream is used. Jade Clinics also offers local anesthesia, the same numbing used in dental procedures, for clients who want maximum comfort. Discomfort tends to decrease over time as hair becomes finer.
Between sessions, shaving is the recommended hair removal method. It does not disturb the hair root, so it will not interfere with treatment progress. Waxing, tweezing, and threading are not compatible with electrolysis because they pull out the hair root, preventing the follicle from being treated in the next session. They also increase blood flow at the follicle, the exact opposite of what electrolysis is trying to achieve.
What we see in the clinic: Jennifer’s husband wore a T-shirt at the beach for years because he was self-conscious about his back hair. Manscaping his own back was never a realistic option. It took time to convince him to start treatment, and his back turned out to be one of the hairiest Jennifer has ever treated. Treatment gave him the confidence to go without the cover-up.
”The environment of Jade clinic stood out for me as being clean, quiet, serene and calm. I love the welcoming mood. However, that which sold me on electrolysis was Sonja Rattan, a skilled electrologist, who I have found to be professional, knowledgeable, approachable, pleasant, accommodating, kind, thoughtful and patient. I have very much appreciated the manner in which Sonja has dealt with me since our first meeting. As she educated me about hair growth, the treatment process of electrolysis, she took the time needed to ensure that I understood. She answered my questions professionally and succinctly. She listened attentively to my concerns, and took an interest in my issues as they pertained to my situation. I value that Sonja communicates openly with me. She is friendly, and pleasant while maintaining appropriate boundaries. I think it is worthwhile to mention that I am needle-phobic, and that the kind manner in which Sonja dealt with me at our first meeting, coupled with her patience and her thoughtfulness engendered the trust I needed to proceed with my decision to go ahead with electrolysis.

Common Questions About Manscaping
Can Electrolysis Treat Large Areas Like the Back?
Yes. Any area men typically manscape can be treated, including the back, shoulders, chest, groin, and beard line. Larger areas take longer appointment times (and possibly more sessions if the areas are not cleared in the same session), and Jade Clinics offers multi-hour sessions and dual-Electrologist treatments to move through larger zones efficiently.
Does Electrolysis Work Over Tattoos?
Electrolysis can be safely performed over healed tattoos because it targets the follicle directly without affecting ink in the skin. Laser hair removal cannot be used over tattoos. An experienced Electrologist is essential for safe treatment on tattooed skin.
How Many Sessions Does Electrolysis Take for Body Hair?
A typical full course runs 12 to 18 months of regular sessions. The exact number depends on the treatment area, hair density, and how consistently sessions are spaced. Hair grows in cycles, and each session treats the hairs that are actively growing at that time.
Is Electrolysis Painful on the Body?
Discomfort varies by body area and tends to decrease over time as hair becomes finer. Topical numbing cream and local anesthesia are both available for comfort.
